I Think axxo and fxg use Virtual Dub for making their rips.
I don't know how it works but it's a good compression software.

MKVMerge can also be used to rip movies or videos in .mkv format (Matroska Video Format) in very high quality and small size.

So, for a rip from a DVR on a TV broadcast, 4:3, would you want to match the width to 720 rather than 800? Just checking to when you would want to use a different width depending upon what you are ripping.

Televisions are of the following resolutions:

SDTV: 480i (NTSC, 720×480 split into two 240-line fields)
SDTV: 576i (PAL, 720×576 split into two 288-line fields)
EDTV: 480p (NTSC, 720×480)
EDTV: 576p (PAL, 720×576)
HDTV: 720p (1280×720)
HDTV: 1080i (1280×1080, 1440×1080, or 1920×1080 split into two 540-line fields)
HDTV: 1080p (1920×1080 progressive scan)

most consumer DVD Video discs use either 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio, stored at a resolution of 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL). Course this is for standard DVD, not HD or blueray.

Also, does anyone know a good scale to use for width verse size? like if you are doing a 720 width then 700mb is a good size, but if doing 1280 width then ?mb is a good size.

Knowing this information would be a value and help get the best quality you can without over killing the file size without any improvement.

Thanks for any info someone can give. Also, this is a great blog, good job.

Just wanted to express my deep thanks for the wonderful knowledge you have helped me acquire. The method and program used are very easy and simple to use compared to the other complicated processes I have been trying. Thanks again and God bless you
